Exercise #4: Documentary Reflection

October 22, 2023 By: Yu Ming

Upon reviewing the proposed changes to conservation rules in the Hamilton, Halton, and Niagara regions of Ontario, I find myself in alignment with the concerns raised by conservation authorities and local leaders. The proposed changes, while addressing the housing crisis, could potentially weaken environmental protections and have adverse consequences for habitat preservation and sustainable development.

The historical context of the Commission of Conservation, established in 1909, highlights the importance of regulating private resource development and opposing monopolies to safeguard public interests in terms of conserving forests, waterways, lands, and minerals. It underscores the vital role of public involvement in shaping conservation policies.

Drawing from the documentaries “The Conservation Movement” in this course unit, it is evident that civil disobedience and public action have historically been instrumental in bringing about positive change. The Commission of Conservation’s declaration of principles exemplifies the role of public advocacy in shaping conservation policies. Similarly, in modern times, environmental activists have used civil disobedience and public protests to push for positive changes in environmental policies, such as those addressing climate change, deforestation, or pollution.

While civil disobedience is often seen as a last resort, it can be a powerful tool for raising awareness and influencing policymakers. The concerns raised by conservation authorities in response to the proposed changes reflect the ongoing need for public engagement and advocacy to protect the environment.

In conclusion, the proposed changes in conservation rules underscore the importance of continued public engagement to ensure that the balance between housing needs and environmental protection is maintained. The historical and contemporary examples of civil disobedience in environmentalism illustrate that the active involvement of citizens is essential in shaping policies that safeguard our natural resources and ecosystems.

My position, therefore, is in support of the concerns raised by conservation authorities and local leaders. I believe that it is crucial to strike a balance between addressing the housing crisis and preserving our environment, and any changes to conservation rules should be made with careful consideration of their potential consequences on the natural world. Public engagement and advocacy play a vital role in this process, as history has shown that positive change often stems from active citizen participation in environmental issues.
