Assignment #1 Exercise # 3

So What I have learned about Conservationism is that our environment is well and truly a very bad place right now and even though a lot of people preach about Conservaision, not enough is being done at least not enough to truly help the environment.

For example, in LA alone one city in the USA uses about 112 gallons of water each day which is absolutely insane, And then over the course of 60 years we have managed to infect every part of almost every ocean and body of water in the world with some form of plastic or other human wastegarbage. The really messed up part about all of this is that no single person can really change anything at least on a noticeable level, So in reality, whether you yourself are trying to live a very green and renewable life it doesn’t really matter because that electric car that you drive is not really helping anything because I would say that it is actually worse for the environment than a normal car that runs on gas because the lithium for that cars battery still has to be mined and it is often mined at the cost of some third world countries especially really poor African countries. So what I learned is what I have already known for a long time is that sure on a personal level we can all make changes to try to be more environmentally aware but nothing is going to ultimately change until we as a society start to hold governments and major corporations responsible and make them change their ways but until then Climate change is not going to be fixed.

  1. I agree that governments and corporations need to be held accountable but I disagree that each of us doing what we can will not have any impact. If a million people stop using plastic straws, that is millions fewer plastic straws in our environment.

As for the electric car debate, I recognize that lithium mining is terrible for the environment and that it is a non-renewable resource which are both disturbing facts, however, the continued use of fossil fuels is literally killing our planets, so although far from perfect, I believe the electric car is a step in the right direction. All things being equal, I sure wish I had one now with the soaring gas prices!
