Topic 1: Conversation
Whale migrations: how new UN treaty aims to protect species on the high seas (theconversation.com)
There is still truly little information regarding the travels of whales in the ocean and many scientists still do not fully understand why whales take these migrations across the world. Most parts of the oceans are not under protection, increasing the number of whale threats in the open ocean, such as fisheries and climate change. In chapter 9, it sheds light on how all the elements of an ecosystem are connected and function together; how slight changes can drastically increase the consequences. If the whale population were to decrease the risk of extinction, the consequences would be dire and have a negative impact on the ecosystem.
Topic 2: Parks
Canada’s National Parks are Colonial Crime Scenes | The Walrus
Within the wilderness conversation article, it states that the Canadian government excluded the indigenous peoples for tourism and sport hunting, not to benefit the land or the wildlife. In the media article, it shreds light on how Canada started creating national parks throughout history. The Canadian government removed the indigenous peoples off the land and disregarded their spiritual and traditional connection to the land. Indigenous lands have been taken from them throughout the centuries and when they speak up about land rights, many are shamed upon. Indigenous peoples are fighting for their land rights and believe that giving back the park’s land is only one step towards reconciliation.

  1. Topic One: Conservation. I like how you reflect on how interconnected species are with the surrounding health of ecosystems. Ecosystem-based management is an exciting approach to conservation. Unfortunately, I could not open the link.

  2. I also agree that the governments treatment of indigenous peoples, land, and beliefs is shameful. Although I do not necessarily agree that giving back park lands is a step towards reconciliation, I do agree that we must be far more respectful of current indigenous lands and history.

  3. I do agree with you on disrespecting and mistreating the indigenous people and disturbing their spiritual and traditional connection with their land. There should be some other way of compensating them which the government should prioritize but I really do not believe that giving back their land can be a proper solution and a step towards reconcilation.
