Exercise #3: Connecting Past and Present

October 2, 2023 By: Bruno Knopfel

Article 1 – Conservation

The article discusses Nepal’s plan to gift rhinoceroses to China for conservation purposes. Conservationists are urging caution, expressing concerns about potential risks to the rhino population in Nepal, which has seen significant progress in recent years. They highlight the importance of rigorous monitoring and cooperation between both countries to ensure the well-being and protection of the rhinos in their new habitat. Additionally, experts focus on the need for transparency and devotion to international guidelines in this conservation effort.

Article 2 – Urbanization

The article highlights some worrying info about Canadian cities losing a lot of green areas because of urban growth. Researchers used satellite data from three different years (2001, 2011, and 2019) and found that cities like Toronto, Montreal, Kelowna, and Milton all saw significant declines in green spaces. While only Saskatoon and Regina actually gained some. The main culprit here is urbanization, as populations are rising steeply.
