Conservation group buys out hunting rights in B.C. rainforest to protect wildlife

According to this article, a conservation group in British Columbia states that to save wildlife, they have acquired the sole right to hunt in a quarter of the Great Bear Rainforest on the north and central coast of the province. According to the Raincoast Conservation Foundation, they had to raise $1.92 million over two years to purchase the 18,000-square-kilometer tenure from commercial hunters.

According to Raincoast, it was said that with six tenures spanning more than 56,000 square kilometers, the acquisition places the environmental group as the largest hunting tenure holder in British Columbia. According to Falconer, the purchases enable Raincoast to preserve wildlife while “lighting a path” toward the growth of an ecotourism industry independent of the killing and exploitation of resources. Since 2005, when a 2001 ban on hunting grizzly bears was lifted, the organization has been purchasing hunting rights in the province.

Marine ecosystems off B.C.’s Great Bear coast get $335M for new protections

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claims in another article that his government is collaborating with the provincial government and 17 First Nations in British Columbia to increase the protection of marine ecosystems off the Great Bear Rainforest’s coast. According to Justin Trudeau, the project will support sustainable development for the waters off the rainforest on the central and northern coasts of British Columbia while creating roughly 14,000 square kilometers of new protected areas. According to the same article, it tends to state that the BC government is contributing $60 million, but the federal government wants to continue to pay $200 million to start. To establish an ongoing fund, philanthropic investors are contributing $75 million, for a total of $335 million.
